 January, 2001
Dear Cambridge Family,

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2001 !!

The holidays are over and we are settling into a new year of learning and activity around the study center.  Again we invite you to drop by or make arrangements to visit a specific class and join in the excitement of what's happening at CSC.  You will find it refreshing to see young people and adults so enthusiastic about learning.

In response to numerous inquiries regarding middle school classes, Eric Fullgraf is busy developing a new curriculum: the Cambridge Preparatory Year.  Beginning the first week in January we welcomed Kate Keim as the first student of this new class, which seems appropriate since Kate's brother, Ben (currently a freshman at the University of Virginia), was Bruce's first student. Cambridge Preparatory Year is an introduction to the study center's method and worldview, appropriate for middle school students. Those who participate will study literature and the arts, history, cultural apologetics and theology. A new prep class, lasting the school year, will begin in August. Let us know if you are interested!

Cambridge students and instructors will be going on a field trip next Tuesday, January 30th to Florida Southern College to attend Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors" performed at Branscomb Auditorium by John Houseman's British theatre company.  We are grateful to Dr. William Hatten of the FSC Office of Development for providing a block of tickets for Cambridge Study Center.  A reception will follow at the Kirby's.

Film nights in January included the Book of Life on January 5th with the discussion led by Cannon Kirby.  The January 16th film night featured the Bob Dylan film Don't Look Back with discussion led by Eric Fullgraf.  Our thanks to Vince Strawbridge, Jr. for joining us for the Dylan film and offering personal insights from his growing up in the 60's impacted by the music of Bob Dylan. February First & Third films: Lord of the Flies and Dark City.   You can check the Cambridge website for feature films each month or email us if you would like to be added to the First & Third Film Night snail mail list.

Congratulations to Scott Phillips for lettering in golf with the Lakeland High School golf team.  Scott is an avid golfer and we especially appreciate his efforts trying to improve the golfing skills of instructor Dustin Kirby... a daunting task!!! Miriam Keim (LHS Swim Team) and Lauren Saunders (LCS Swim Team) were listed as Top Fall Athletes by the Tampa Tribune. Keep swimming girls!!! Our compliments to Jack Harrell for a great basketball game last Friday night as LCS played Santa Fe...Jack showed skill and  amazing composure in a tough match up between these local rivals !!!   Josiah Armes will be taking organ classes twice a month at Stetson University under Boyd Jones, head of the organ department.  Dr. Jones is a well known organist who received his doctorate from Yale University.  We are grateful for this opportunity for Josiah to improve his organ abilities ...Soli Deo Gloria... as he uses his talents to the Glory of God.  Alumnus Ben Keim continues to write sports articles for the UVA Cavalier Daily...great job, Ben...to read Ben's latest article go to www.cavalierdaily.com/sports.asp and click on the highlighted text for the complete article.   Dustin Douglass will be attending Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia and has been awarded a soccer scholarship... Congratulations, Dustin!!!  We loved seeing ALL the study center alumni (Ben from UVA; David Macey, Aaron Mesh, Rebekah Forman and Josh Howell from Covenant College) over the holidays...it was fun and encouraging to hear about their classes and activities at college...many of them also attended film nights while they were home.

Meet the Student: Rebecca Brandt, who has always been homeschooled, is 14 years old and is in her second year of studies with Cambridge.  She takes the complete Thoughts Captive (Interdisciplinary Worldview Studies) class with Bruce and Logos and Light (Latin and Logic) with Dustin.  Rebecca is the daughter of David and Nancy Brandt and is the oldest of the six Brandt children.  Rebecca has four brothers (Michael, Matthew, John Calvin, and Luke) and one sister (Kaylynn).  Rebecca's main interest is reading...along with her serious studies she is a Star Wars fan and enjoys reading anything related to Star Wars.  Rebecca and her family live in Lakeland and attend Covenant Presbyterian Church where she works in the church library...and since we sit behind them in church, I know that she is a huge help to her parents with her younger siblings!! :)

We apologize to those who may not have received eBridge in December. After several attempts to send it and numerous computer glitches we were never quite sure how many were actually delivered.  If you wish to read the December edition, you can find it on the website News page at http://www.cambridgestudycenter.org/newsletter.htm

We appreciate your continued support and prayers during these days of rapid growth for the study center.  Please pray with us specifically for the Lord's provision of a larger facility; for our instructors, that they would be sensitive to the Lord's direction in their teaching and for our students as God prepares them to engage and impact our culture for Christ.

Sincerely,
Jane Kirby

P.S. Contributed by Katie Mesh:
Cantabrigian (kant-uh-BRIJ-eeuh-n)
adjective:     1. Of or relating to Cambridge, England, or Cambridge, Massachusetts
                        2. Of or relating to Cambridge University
noun:        1. A native or resident of Cambridge, England or Cambridge, Massachusetts
                        2. A student or graduate of Cambridge University (or Cambridge Study Center?)
        From Medieval Latin "Cantabrigia"

Katie suggests that eBridge might be called "The Cantabrigian Chronicle." We'll think about it!
